A post-modern theatre piece by In Bed With My Brother that stages the story of the proto-punk band The Shaggs through shock and confrontation.
In Bed With My Brother bring Philosophy of the World to The Old Market on Thursday 12 November, running from 19:30 to 21:30. It's a theatre piece about The Shaggs, the proto-punk outsiders whose controlling father forced them to become a band despite their lack of musical aptitude. The show stages the sisters' story through shock and confrontation: the three performers wear long shaggy wigs and mime The Shaggs' songs to pounding gabber, while a stage manager character, Neil, plays the male figures in their lives and eventually dies of a heart attack, freeing them.
It's a post-modern piece that breaks traditional narrative structure and frames the sisters' story as a broader feminist struggle for autonomy, dealing with fate, free will, power, patriarchy, band t-shirts and daddy issues. The show attempts to wrangle their story into a three-act biopic, with the three performers taking on the sisters and Neil handling the men around them.
