An interactive, hands-on masterclass to learn the art of shucking oysters, covering their history, provenance and different species.
Riddle & Finns are running an Oyster Opening Masterclass on Saturday 31 October, a ninety-minute session that takes you from knowing nothing about oysters to actually being able to open one yourself. It's a hands-on thing, not a demo you watch from a distance, so you'll be getting stuck in rather than just listening.
The session is built around two parts. First, there's the background: the history of oysters, where they come from, and the differences between the various species. Once you've got the context, you move on to the practical side, learning the art of shucking — the actual process of prying an oyster open without damaging the meat inside. By the time you're finished, you should be able to handle a fresh oyster with a bit of confidence.
It's worth knowing who's behind it. Riddle & Finns, at 139 Kings Road Arches, has been serving seafood for twenty years and describes itself as a connoisseur of oysters, so this isn't a one-off workshop from someone who's just picked up a knife. It's their territory, and the masterclass is designed to turn guests into oyster aficionados.
