Marky Ramone plays Patterns on Saturday 13 February, performing under the name Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg. If you've ever wondered who was behind the drums for the Ramones during their most enduring stretch, this is the man. Born Marc Bell in Brooklyn in 1956, he's the American drummer best known for his long tenure in the punk rock group that gave the genre its name.
He didn't start there, though. He picked up the drums at 16 with the hard rock band Dust and spent the early 1970s working his way through the punk scene with Jayne County, BackstreetBoys and The Voidoids. He joined the Ramones in 1978 when Tommy Ramone stepped back, and spent fifteen years in the band. He left in 1983 to fight an alcohol addiction and returned in 1987, staying on until the group retired in 1996. In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a Ramone.
Since then, he's kept touring with Marky Ramone and Friends and the punk supergroup Osaka Popstar, and he hosts the Marky Ramone Punk Rock Blitzkrieg radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio. That's where the name for this show comes from, too.
