Loveplay

ACT Brighton are bringing Moira Buffini's Loveplay to The Lantern Theatre on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 July, both nights starting at 20:00. It's a production from their One Year Foundation in Acting, so you're seeing the work of a cohort of actors rather than a touring company.

Loveplay is a broad sweep of a play, tracing 2,000 years of love and lust through the changing fortunes of one address: 29 Trick Street. It works in a series of interconnecting scenes that run from the Romans right through to the present day, with satire and romance threading through the darker moments. The play looks at how social conventions around relationships have shifted over the centuries, and the people who've passed through that one house along the way.

The Theatre Press has described Buffini's script as "exceptionally well written, with some brilliant comedic moments scattered amongst the darker themes", and that's a good summary of what to expect: it's a play that doesn't shy away from the heavy stuff but keeps a sharp, funny edge running through it.

One thing to be aware of before you book: this production contains scenes of a sexual nature, including partial nudity, non-consensual sex and sexual violence, as well as coercive, sexist and abusive scenes. It's a play that deals with the rougher side of human relationships, so it's worth keeping in mind if you're bringing someone along or deciding if it's for you. Tickets are £10, and the show runs at The Lantern Theatre, 77 St James's Street, Brighton, BN2 1PA, on 27 and 28 July at 20:00.
