A five-day summer art school for children aged 8-13 exploring contemporary art techniques, with an exhibition finale.
Leap Then Look are running their summer art school at Phoenix Art Space from Monday 27 to Friday 31 July, a five-day programme for children aged 8 to 13. It's not set up as a traditional art lesson; the whole thing is built around contemporary art, and the kids work alongside professional artists throughout the week.
Over the five days, they'll experiment with a wide range of techniques: screen printing, sculpture, performance, installation, film, photography, mixed media and textiles. The work comes from a mix of collaborative and independent projects, so they'll be working together as much as they'll be figuring things out on their own. The week ends with an exhibition showcase where the children display what they've made.
Parents who've sent their kids before describe it as a free-range, confidence-building experience that encourages independence, problem-solving and resilience. It's less about following a set of instructions and more about getting stuck in and seeing what happens.
