Live music gig by Gen & The Degenerates at The Hare & Hounds in Brighton.
Gen & The Degenerates play The Hare & Hounds on Wednesday 7 April, with the music starting at 7pm. It's a single-act bill, so the whole night is built around them.
Gen & The Degenerates is the stage name of Genevieve Glynn-Reeves (she/they), and the project is a solo one. She works from her own experience of the world's darker side — war, crime, climate change, economic upheaval — and turns it into music that finds fun, silliness and lightness in the face of it. It's a specific kind of approach: she doesn't want to shy away from the darkness of being human, but she doesn't want to be fully consumed by it either. That tension — the heavy stuff sitting right next to the lighthearted — is exactly what the music is about.
It's the kind of gig that works best when you know what's behind it. The songs come from a place of looking at the things that usually weigh us down and deciding to find something playful there instead of just sinking into them. If that's your sort of thing, it's worth seeing it live.
