A creative writing workshop exploring Brighton's history of global majority creativity, facilitated by Dulani Kulasinghe using the venue's archive.
Dulani Kulasinghe is running a creative writing workshop called Exploring the Whole Story at Brighton Dome on Tuesday 13 October, and it's one of those sessions that asks you to look at the city from a slightly different angle. The whole thing is built around Brighton's history as a home for global majority creativity, and the starting point is the Dome's own archive of programmes, photographs and film. You'll be working with that material as a springboard to create your own work, so it's as much about digging through the records as it is about the writing itself.
Kulasinghe is a Brighton-based writer-researcher and musician whose work focuses on belonging and the legacies of empire. The session draws on the fact that global majority artists have been performing in Brighton since the early 19th century, and the archive provides the evidence of that long, often overlooked presence. It's not just a history lesson, though; the point is to use those records to get your own writing moving.
The venue adds its own layer to the mix. The Dome was first built as the Prince Regent's Royal Stables and Riding House in 1803, became cavalry barracks in 1850, and was repurposed as a concert venue and assembly hall in 1867. It's now a Grade I listed building with three performance spaces — the Concert Hall, Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre — and this workshop takes place in the Founders Room on Church Street.
