A vibrant festival celebrating Mexican Day of the Dead traditions with art, workshops, dancing, music and food at Brighton Open Market.
Dia de Muertos takes over Brighton Open Market on Wednesday 28 October and Sunday 1 November, both days starting at 10:30. It's a celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead, and the market is transformed for the occasion, bringing the traditions of the holiday to London Road.
There's a good bit to do across the two days. You'll find colourful art and calaveras — those iconic sugar skulls — alongside creative workshops and family activities. There's Mexican folkloric dancing and music, and the food side of things is well-covered: tacos, homemade salsas, and traditional pan de muerto, the sweet bread made specifically for the holiday. At the heart of it all is a community ofrenda, the altar where people leave offerings to remember and honour those who've passed.
It's organised by CasaAzul, and the whole thing is free to attend, so you can drop in for an hour or spend a full morning there. If you're coming with kids, the workshops and family activities are a good place to start; if you're just in it for the food and the music, the tacos and the dancing will keep you occupied. The ofrenda is the quiet centre of the day, and it's worth taking a moment there.
