Dexys Midnight Runners: Solo (Later Set)

Dexys Midnight Runners are back in Brighton on Wednesday 9 September, with Kevin Rowland playing a solo set at Resident Music. It's the later of two shows he's doing that night, and it's being billed as a celebration of the band's latest album, LOVE.

LOVE is the record that brings Rowland back to the stage. It's described as Dexys Midnight Runners' latest and possibly their final album, a collection of scenes and reckonings drawn from the singer's own life. The songs are built around those personal accounts, and this solo set is the first time they'll be heard live in a room this small. Rather than a full band, it's just Rowland on stage, which puts the focus on the lyrics and the songs themselves.

It's a stripped-back way to hear the new material, and it's the same approach he's taking for the whole night. The set is built around LOVE, so the new songs will be the main thing on the bill, played in a room where you can hear every word. If you've followed Dexys since the early days, this is a very different way of seeing them — just the voice and the songs, without the brass or the full band around him.
