A dark comedy thriller about an actor hired to impersonate the Prime Minister, spiralling into murder and conspiracy.
Dead Ringer opens at Brighton Little Theatre on Friday 25 September, with the curtain going up at 19:30. It's a dark comedy thriller by Charles Ross, directed by Myles Locke, and it kicks off on the eve of a general election when the Prime Minister suddenly drops dead. Or so it seems.
Two desperate cabinet members recruit an out-of-work actor to step into the PM's shoes until the votes are cast, and for a while, that's exactly what happens. What starts as a playful political charade played for laughs soon turns dangerously real when the actor discovers the Prime Minister wasn't felled by a heart attack but poisoned. From there, the deception spirals into a deadly game of murder, conspiracy and ambition, all laced with dark comedy.
It's a play that works on two levels: the farcical side of an actor pretending to run the country, and the thriller side that kicks in once the poisoning comes to light. The comedy comes from the absurdity of the situation, while the thriller side keeps the stakes high. It's a dark comedy thriller in the truest sense, so expect a bit of both.
