Congregational

Fatt Butcher is bringing Congregational to The Corn Exchange at Brighton Dome on Friday 30 October. It's a newly composed choral service written for the nightclub, and the title gives it away: it's a piece that puts a choir at the centre of the dancefloor.

The setup is what makes it. You've got a live choir, a DJ, and a piano all working together, so it's a choral work that doesn't sit still. It's not a concert where you sit and listen in silence; it's a service for the club, and the choir is the main feature rather than the background. The DJ and piano fill in around them, and the whole thing is built for a room that's meant to be danced in.

It's a collaboration, too. Fatt Butcher worked on this with Nicky Harris and Tobre, and you can hear that coming from different angles. The choir provides the vocal weight, the DJ keeps the beat moving, and the piano adds a melodic line that ties it together. It's a new piece of writing, so this is one of the first times it'll be performed live.
