Choral Workshop

Donald Greig is leading a choral workshop at Exeter Street Hall on Sunday 20 September, starting at 11:00. It's a day for singers to get stuck into the polyphony of the Florentine Renaissance, with the repertoire drawn from the music of Dufay, Isaac and Verdelot.

If you're not familiar with the names, these are three of the big figures from that era. Guillaume Dufay was one of the most influential composers of the fifteenth century, bridging the gap between the medieval and Renaissance styles. Jacob Obrecht's contemporary, Andrea Isaac, and the later Verdelot all worked with that same polyphonic tradition — multiple independent melodic lines weaving together rather than a single melody with chords underneath. That's exactly what the day is built around: working through those interlocking parts and hearing how they fit together.

Greig will be taking singers through the music, so you'll be singing it rather than just listening. The repertoire comes from those three composers, and the focus is on the polyphony of the Florentine Renaissance, so it's as much about the period as it is about the individual pieces. It's a full day of singing, not a quick session, and it's aimed at people who want to spend a few hours working through the music.
