Three-day programme with exhibitions, talks, workshops and portfolio reviews celebrating women in documentary photography.
POST, Brighton & Hove's new photography centre, is hosting a three-day programme celebrating women in documentary photography from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September. It's run by FotoDocument with Nikon's support, and the whole weekend marks the tenth anniversary of the Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award.
Friday evening kicks off with an artist talk and the exhibition launch of When the Earth Gives Birth by Johanna Alarcón, the 2026 Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award winner. There's also a premiere trailer screening of the forthcoming Marilyn Stafford documentary, followed by a Q&A with its director, Ellie Emptage. Saturday brings artist talks and panels with Natalya Saprunova, the 2022 Award winner, alongside Andrea Bruce and Donna DeCesare. They're joined by Laura El-Tantawy and Neo Ntsoma for a panel on women in contemporary documentary photography. There's a book talk and signing with Carol Allen-Storey, presented by GOST Books. Sunday is the hands-on day, with Nikon workshops and portfolio reviews run by Nikon Ambassador Carolyn Mendelsohn.
The weekend is built around the name it's celebrating. Marilyn Stafford (1926–2019) was a documentary photographer whose career started by chance in New York in 1948, when she was asked to photograph Albert Einstein. She spent time in Paris under the guidance of Magnum founders Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson, and went on to document the Algerian War of Independence, the children of the Cite Lesage-Bullourde slum, and, in 1971, India's first woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. She settled in England in the mid-1960s and became one of the few women photographers on Fleet Street; her work from 1948 to 1980 covered refugees, tribal peoples and fashion, as well as figures like Edith Piaf, Lee Marvin and Sir Richard Attenborough.

Across the three days, the programme pairs a retrospective of ten years of award-winning projects with a display of Stafford's own work. It runs from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September at POST in Brighton.
