Learn to make 3 varieties of scented candles using 100% natural soy wax, essential oils, and colour dyes in this 2-hour workshop.
If you’re looking for a hands-on way to spend a Saturday afternoon, there’s a great local option coming up on March 7th: the Candle Making Class in person. This isn't just about melting wax; the focus is on learning how to create high-quality, aromatic candles using 100% natural, vegan, and eco-friendly soy wax. The class is run by Charlie Doodle, known locally as Charlie, from The Flamingo Studio, and it’s a deep dive into the craft, covering everything from essential oils and fragrances to colour dyes.

The workshop is designed to be comprehensive yet accessible for beginners. Over the two-hour session, you’ll learn the technical side of candle making, including how to calculate wax volume, the proper dimensioning of wicks, and controlling temperature—skills that apply to various wax types, including beeswax and palm stearin. You’ll get hands-on experience blending scents and choosing dyes, and the best part is that you walk away with a selection of three finished candles, typically including a container candle, a floating candle, and a beeswax variety. The cost generally falls between £45 and £55 per person, which covers all the materials you need, and if you book one of the popular Saturday afternoon slots (like the 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM window), they often include a glass of bubbly and refreshments.
Charlie hosts these sessions year-round, usually offering slots on Friday mornings (10:00 AM) and Saturday afternoons. The studio is located in Hove, specifically at The Flamingo House & Studio, 14a Wilbury Road, BN3 3JN. It’s a welcoming environment suitable for adults and older teens; the minimum age is 16, though those 12 and up can attend if accompanied by a paying adult. It’s also worth noting that the class is a popular choice for group events, particularly hen parties, where the bride can attend for free if the group size reaches ten or more. It’s a practical way to spend a couple of hours, learn a new skill, and leave with something genuinely useful for your home.
