The 35th anniversary of Brighton and Hove Pride, a major international festival celebrating diversity, inclusion and education, with a 'Pride with Purpose' ethos.
Brighton and Hove Pride returns to Preston Park from Friday 31 July to Sunday 3 August, and this one is a bit of a milestone: it's the 35th anniversary of the festival. The organisers describe it as the UK's most popular international Pride festival and the city's biggest visitor attraction, and this year's edition runs under the theme 'The Power of Love'. The all-reality streaming service Hayu is back as headline sponsor.
There's a fair bit of history behind the weekend. Its roots go back to the Sussex Gay Liberation Front, formed in 1971 by students and LGBTQ+ activists; the first Gay Parade took place in 1973, though only a small part of the community felt safe enough to march, and Pride didn't return until 1991. Managing director Paul Kemp has said the anniversary feels special because the festival reflects on the journey since those early nineties years.
