A free hands-on bookbinding workshop for LGBTQIA+ residents, teaching simple stitches to create zines, notebooks and sketchbooks.
If you have been looking for a creative way to spend a Saturday afternoon, there is a bookbinding workshop coming up on May 30th, 2026, led by the artist and designer Soofiya. The session is hosted at Lighthouse, located at 28 Kensington Street, and runs from 13:00 to 15:00. It is a practical, hands-on introduction to the craft, specifically focusing on techniques like saddle stitch and Japanese stab stitch binding. By the end of the two hours, the goal is for participants to have created their own zines, notebooks, or sketchbooks to take home.

The workshop is part of a series of five creative sessions funded by the Brighton and Hove City Council Fairness Fund for People 2025-2026, with support from Lighthouse. Because of this funding, the event is free to attend. The organisers are providing all the necessary materials, including a bookbinding kit, and there will be tea and refreshments available during the session. It is worth noting that the work involves using needles and other sharp tools, so keep that in mind if you are planning to attend.
Regarding the logistics, the event is designed for LGBTQIA+ residents who are on a low income, or who are experiencing financial hardship or social isolation during the current cost-of-living crisis. The minimum age for participation is 16. Lighthouse is fully accessible for wheelchair users, and the workshop will take place on the ground floor, which has level access and a reception area. If you are interested in attending, you can find registration details through the official Eventbrite page or check the Visit Brighton website for further information.
