The Summer Palace returns to The Lantern Theatre for three performances on Friday 6, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, with each show starting at 19:00. It's a psychological thriller by Paul Bassett Davies, and it's staged as a two-hander: Davies takes one of the roles himself, and he's joined on stage by local actor John Black.
The story follows an internationally acclaimed theatre director working under a totalitarian regime. He's brought in for questioning, only to find himself facing an actor he hasn't seen for twenty years. From there, the personal and the political become dangerously intertwined. Davies describes it as chillingly funny, and the two-hander format keeps the focus tight on the confrontation between the two men.
There's a bit of a full-circle moment to the whole thing. Davies started his career in experimental multimedia performance before moving into radio and television, where he worked with some of the biggest names in British comedy and drama. He's since written four novels and several stories, one of which Stephen King praised. This brings him back to the stage, and with him playing one of the roles, it's his own writing being performed right in front of him.
