Jacob Marx-Rice's Chemistry, a darkly funny and moving exploration of love and mental health, at The Lantern Theatre.
Jacob Marx-Rice brings Chemistry to The Lantern Theatre on Friday 13 November and Sunday 15 November, both nights starting at 21:00. It's part of the 2nd Chance Fringe 26 season, which brings Fringe shows back to the city after their Edinburgh run.
Chemistry follows two people who meet in a psychiatrist's waiting room: Steph, who battles chronic depression, and Jamie, who has crashed after pushing himself too hard and too fast. They spark instantly, and the play works its way through what happens when two people in that position find each other. It's described as darkly funny and deeply moving, and it doesn't shy away from the harder parts of the subject.
Marx-Rice frames the story as a frank exploration of how people manage love and life when they rely on chemicals to keep themselves balanced. He sets it against the backdrop of studies showing that one in four adults in England will experience a mental health problem each year, so the personal story sits inside a much larger, very common reality. It's a play about the intersection of mental health and relationships, and the medication that often sits between the two.
