A candlelit musical journey through the gothic imagination of Tim Burton's films, performed by Mystery Ensemble in a non-standard venue.
Mystery Ensemble bring Tim Burton's Universe to St Peter's Church on Hinton Road on Saturday 31 October, a candlelit concert that runs through the gothic imagination of Tim Burton's films and the scores of Danny Elfman, his lifelong collaborator. Elfman's writing blends playfulness with menace and tenderness with grandeur, and the programme pulls from a long list of their work together: Alice in Wonderland, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice, Batman, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. 'This Is Halloween' and the ice-dance theme from Edward Scissorhands are among the highlights.
Mystery Ensemble is a group of professional musicians who stage unique programmes in non-standard venues across the UK. They perform the material in their own arrangements, with soaring voices and bold instrumental colours. They describe the night as a live theatrical experience rather than a straight soundtrack concert, one that leans on the connection between the musicians and the surrounding architecture, with the atmosphere shifting from the macabre to the magical. It's pitched as perfect for Halloween, and the date fits that to the day.
