A festive social ceilidh with live music from Jigfoot, a traditional dance music band, at Bournemouth's national dance centre.
Pavilion Dance South West brings back its Festive Ceilidh on Saturday 19 December, the annual return of a night that pairs live music with social dancing. If you've never been, a ceilidh (pronounced 'kaylee') is a social folk dance rooted in Celtic traditions, led by a caller who walks you through the steps as you go. You don't need a partner to join in, and you don't need any prior experience either.
On the music is Jigfoot, who approach traditional dance tunes with energy, inventiveness and, above all, swing. They draw mainly on southern English sources, especially Hampshire, and work with dancers Simon and Jo Harmer to develop material inspired by southern English step dancing. It's a sound that sits firmly in the folk tradition but keeps things moving, which is exactly what you want when there's a dance floor to fill.
They're no strangers to the ceilidh circuit. They've played festivals including Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Sidmouth Folk Week, Chippenham Folk Festival, Hastings Jack in the Green, Wimborne Minster Folk Festival, Bridport Folk Festival and Bunkfest. This is their turn in Bournemouth, as part of the annual festive celebration the venue runs every December.
