Sci-fi horror show from Yorkshire company Thunder Road, with illusions, atmospheric projections and jump scares, on its tour of English venues.
The Void: A Horror Story plays at Birmingham Rep on 27 and 28 October, two nights of sci-fi horror brought to the city by the Yorkshire company Thunder Road, in association with Watford Palace Theatre. It's a production that sits at the intersection of stage and screen, blending multimedia, storytelling and illusion.
The story is set eight million miles from Earth. It follows Flint, a haunted space ranger drawn to the Odyssey, an ageing research vessel gripped by a nightmare. When he arrives, he finds a failing ship, a missing crew and a deadly force running out of control. Around that, the show paints a decaying future of desperate humans, all-seeing AI and memories of a distant, dangerous past. It mixes powerful illusions, atmospheric projections and jump scares with themes of surveillance and human memory.
Thunder Road is known for fusing multimedia, storytelling and illusion, and this is their biggest tour to date. Writer and director Ryan Simons and producer/actor Alex Moran describe it as darker, more intense and more immersive than their previous work. It's visiting 16 venues across England and Scotland with Arts Council England support, and the reviews have been strong: Glos called it 'a bold plunge into sci-fi horror that electrifies the stage with cinematic flair and unsettling atmosphere', and North West End described it as 'out of this world'.
