New staging of Raymond Briggs' Christmas story with Howard Blake's score, directed and choreographed by Will Tuckett.
The Snowman returns to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on 20 October, running through to 1 November. It's a new stage production of Raymond Briggs' wordless 1978 picture book, and it's one that's held a long following at the Rep since it first arrived here in 1993.
This version keeps Howard Blake's iconic score, including the Christmas classic 'Walking in the Air', and the show's signature flying sequences, but updates the design. Anna Fleischle draws on Briggs' original illustrations, Tahra Zafar crafts the Snowman costume, and Nina Dunn, working with animator Simran, creates a three-dimensionally projected world for the 'Walking in the Air' sequence. The story follows a young boy whose snowman comes to life on Christmas Eve and sets off on a night-time quest, meeting Father Christmas, dancing penguins and reindeer while evading the evil Jack Frost.

Olivier Award winner Will Tuckett directs and choreographs, and he previously created a piece for Birmingham Royal Ballet. He describes it as a family show aimed at a cross-generational audience, so it's as much for the adults who remember the book as it is for the kids. The production is set at the Rep in Centenary Square, and it runs from 20 October to 1 November 2026.
