The Damned play the O2 Academy Birmingham on their 'Final Damnation 50' tour, marking 50 years since the British punk explosion of 1976, with The Saints '73-'78.
The Damned play the O2 Academy Birmingham on Saturday 5 December, part of their Final Damnation 50 UK tour. The night opens with support from The Saints '73-'78, so there's two punk acts on one bill.
The tour marks 50 years since the explosion of 1976, and the title Final Damnation 50 makes the occasion clear. The Damned formed that year and have stayed active since, putting out 11 studio albums and a string of UK chart singles. They're one of the most groundbreaking bands to come out of the British punk scene, and their following grew from London into a global fan base built on their live shows. David Vanian's rich baritone and the band's dark lyrics also helped push them to the forefront of the goth-rock genre.
The current line-up is David Vanian on vocals, Captain Sensible on guitar, Paul Gray on bass, Monty Oxy Moron on keyboards, and Rat Scabies on drums. Scabies' return is a key part of this tour, bringing one of the original members back into the fold for the 50th anniversary. With the keyboards of Oxy Moron in the mix, the sound they're taking on the road is a bit different from the early punk records.
