A Halloween special session of Symphonic Sessions with the CBSO, featuring ghoulishly delightful works from Bernard Herrmann and Saint-Saƫns, with food and a DJ.
The CBSO are bringing a Halloween special to CBSO in Birmingham on Tuesday 27 October, starting at 5:30pm. It's part of their Symphonic Sessions series, which pairs orchestral classics with a more informal, social atmosphere than your usual night at the symphony.
The music is billed as a collection of ghoulishly delightful works, and the two they've named are enough to set the mood. There's Bernard Herrmann's Psycho, the score that practically defined the slasher film, and Saint-Saƫns' Danse Macabre, a piece that's been a Halloween staple since the 1870s. Both lean into the darker side of the orchestral repertoire, and they're just two of the works the orchestra will be working through over the course of the evening.
Because it's a Symphonic Session rather than a standard concert, the music isn't the only thing on the bill. The night is rounded off with wicked food and a killer DJ, so the orchestral side of things gives way to a more social, party-like atmosphere once the playing stops. It's the same format that runs through the whole Symphonic Sessions strand: orchestral classics in a setting that's meant to be a bit more relaxed than a formal concert hall night.
