Members' reception where CBSO members meet the double bass section before a CBSO concert at Symphony Hall.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's double bass section are taking centre stage at Symphony Hall on Wednesday 2 December, for a members' reception that runs ahead of the evening's concert. It's one of those behind-the-scenes things the CBSO does for its members, where you get to meet the players and the staff before the main event, and this time the spotlight is on the double basses — the deep, low end that usually sits at the back of the orchestra.
These receptions are exclusive CBSO gatherings. You'll be greeted by the orchestra's staff, players, conductors and soloists, and the whole point is to get a look at what goes on before a performance, with the musicians pointing out the highlights to listen for once they're actually on stage. It's a chance to hear about the music from the people who'll be playing it, rather than just reading the programme notes.
There's a social side to it, too. You'll be in the room with other members, swapping stories about past, present and future CBSO performances. If you've been following the orchestra for a while, it's a good spot to chat with people who know the repertoire as well as you do.

Places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, and how many receptions you can attend in a season depends on your membership level — from Friend and Gold Friend up to Patron, Silver Patron and Gold Patron. The reception starts at 6:15pm on Wednesday 2 December at Symphony Hall, so you'll have plenty of time to meet the double bass section before the concert begins.
