Poetry workshop led by Ty'rone Haughton, the creator of his one-man show 'Made You Look', to help poets and theatre makers find their voice.
Ty'rone Haughton is running a poetry workshop at the Birmingham Rep on Thursday 29 October, from 7pm. It's called Personal is Universal, and it grew out of Made You Look, the one-man poetry show Haughton wrote and performed.
That show is a visceral, explosive piece of writing by the Jamaican-born poet and performer. It looks at how oppression, grief and state violence break the mind, body and heart of a man, stripping away the layers people use to protect themselves to ask who we are when naked, when we have no fight left, and whether inherited pain can be outrun. It fuses poetry, physical theatre, visual art and sound, and critics have called it performance poetry at its most undiluted and vital.
The workshop focuses on creating personal and cathartic work, helping poets and theatre makers find their own voice and rhythms and see how they translate onto the stage. You'll take away writing and performance techniques alongside individual mentoring. Haughton is an experienced facilitator who has been running poetry workshops for over a decade, so it's a good spot if you're looking for a bit of one-to-one guidance rather than just a group session.
