Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock musical about the final days of Jesus, with Sam Ryder as Jesus, directed by Tim Sheader.
Jesus Christ Superstar opens at the Birmingham Hippodrome on Tuesday 18 May 2027, with the first preview and opening night falling on the same day. It runs through to Saturday 5 June, three weeks in total, after a London run at The London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
It's the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which tells the final days of Jesus through the eyes of Judas, set to a rock score that includes 'I Don't Know How to Love Him', 'Gethsemane' and the title track 'Superstar'. Sam Ryder takes the role of Jesus, bringing his take on the part to UK theatres for the first time in this staging. He's directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Olivier Award winner Drew McOnie and design by Tony and Olivier Award winner Tom Scutt.
The production is a big one: flashing lights, pyrotechnics and an onstage depiction of the crucifixion. The Guardian called it a 'gorgeous, thrilling, heavenly musical', and producer Michael Harrison described it as an 'extraordinary new production' after the first night at the Palladium.
