Sinister, music-filled show by the company Alpaqa about altar boy Jesús and the 'hot man on the cross' in 1990s Peru, recommended for ages 16 and over.
JEEZUS! plays at the Birmingham Hippodrome from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 October, with all performances starting at 7:45pm. It's the debut play from Alpaqa, an award-winning migrant-led company that arrives in Birmingham after taking the Edinburgh Fringe by storm.
The story is set in 1990s Peru under the dictatorship of Alberto Fujimori. It follows Jesús, an altar boy whose first communion is upstaged by the arrival of the 'hot man on the cross' — a collision of Catholic guilt and unrepentant queerness. Alpaqa describes it as a sinful, heart-pounding mix of live music, dark humour and Latin heat, and sums up the vibe with a line that tells you exactly where it sits: 'if Bo Burnham, Bad Bunny and Bertolt Brecht had a baby, this would be it'.
It's not just a Fringe hit, either. The production won the 2025 Untapped Award and The Stage Fringe Five. It runs for about 75 minutes and is recommended for ages 16 and over.
