Live music night with country and bluegrass singer-songwriter Jake Vaadeland and his band, the Sturgeon River Boys, plus support from Dom Glynn.
Jake Vaadeland plays the Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath on Monday 19 October, with Dom Glynn opening the bill. It's a long way from home for Vaadeland, who comes from Saskatchewan in Canada, and he'll be on stage with his supporting band, the Sturgeon River Boys.
If the name isn't ringing a bell, the record might. Vaadeland is a country and bluegrass singer-songwriter who picked up the 2025 Juno Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year for Retro Man. That's the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, and the win puts him in good company across the roots scene over there. He's a songwriter first, and that's what carries the set — the kind of country and bluegrass that doesn't just lean on the tradition but actually writes its own songs within it.
He's not playing solo, either. The Sturgeon River Boys provide the full band sound around him, so you'll get the full bluegrass arrangement rather than just a man and his guitar. With Dom Glynn opening, there's two acts on the bill for the evening. It's a Monday night, so it's one of those mid-week gigs that sits comfortably between the weekend crowds and the Tuesday morning rush.
