Old school hip hop, funk and breaks party celebrating 25 years of Heducation with Andy Smith, DJ Format and open mic cypher.
Heducation celebrates its 25th birthday at The Night Owl on Saturday 17 October, with Andy Smith and DJ Format leading the night. It's a big one for the club: Heducation has been Birmingham's go-to for old school hip hop, funk and breaks since 2001, and this edition marks a quarter-century of the night. It was founded by resident DJ Stylus, also known as Trey, and the party continues in his memory. Over the years it's thrown more than 600 events, so this anniversary carries a fair bit of weight.
Andy Smith is best known as the DJ for Mercury Prize winners Portishead, and he's also behind The Document, his multi-genre mix series. He brings the funk, soul and hip hop parties he's hosted in Camden, Peckham and Shoreditch to the Digbeth dancefloor. DJ Format is one of the UK's most prolific hip hop producers and turntablists, with six albums and more than ten singles to his name. Hosting is Mantis of Aspects, who was a key figure in the development of UK hip hop in the 1990s and 2000s; his first LP, Correct English, also turns 25 this year.
There's more to the night than the two headliners. Trademark Blud puts in a live MC set, and there's an open mic cypher for anyone who wants to get on the mic. Resident DJs Mylz (Hedz), Just One (Funk N Disorderly) and Tucka (Medium Rare) round out the bill, keeping the old school hip hop, funk and breaks going throughout. There's no dress code, and 100% of the profits go to ASTHMA + LUNG UK.
