Musical about tolerance and the fight against racism, with Neil Hurst as Edna Turnblad, at the Birmingham Hippodrome.
Hairspray comes to the Birmingham Hippodrome for a short run from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 October 2027, playing on the Main Stage. It's a musical that started with the 1987 film and went on to take Broadway by storm, picking up eight Tony awards before four Oliviers in the West End and more honours around the world. It's a feel-good classic that still packs a punch with its message of tolerance and the fight against racism.
The story follows the big-hearted Tracy Turnblad and her new friends — the spirited Seaweed and his sister Little Inez, heartthrob Link Larkin and the resolute Motormouth Maybelle — as they strive to change the world. The score includes some of musical theatre's biggest hit songs, like 'Welcome to the 60s', 'You Can't Stop the Beat' and 'Good Morning Baltimore'.
On the casting front, Neil Hurst reprises the role of Edna Turnblad, with further casting to be announced. For those who need them, there are accessible performances throughout the run: a BSL interpreted show, a captioned performance, an audio described show and a touch tour.
