CBSO concert conducted by Jeffrey Skidmore with Ex Cathedra, Carolyn Sampson and others, marking Beethoven's bicentenary.
Ex Cathedra bring Beethoven's Missa Solemnis to Symphony Hall on Sunday 7 March 2027. It's a single-work concert, so the whole afternoon is given over to this one piece rather than a mixed programme. The running time is about an hour and a half, and it goes through without an interval.
Beethoven spent four years on the Missa Solemnis, and he held it up as his most profound masterpiece, believing it surpassed anything else he wrote in scale, sincerity, or vision. It's a massive work, and the line-up reflects that: Jeffrey Skidmore conducts, with Carolyn Sampson on soprano, Martha McLorinan on mezzo-soprano, Sebastian Hill on tenor, and James Rutherford on bass, all supported by Ex Cathedra. That's four soloists and a full choir and orchestra on one stage.
Skidmore has spoken about it as a work he loves dearly, and he expects it to be a highlight of his final season, which marks Beethoven's bicentenary. He describes it as music performed 'from the heart that it may go to the heart'.
