Christmas Music by Candlelight (Ex Cathedra) 2026

Ex Cathedra bring their Christmas Music by Candlelight series to St John the Baptist Church on Wednesday 2 December, one of thirteen concerts they're running across Birmingham, London and the region this season. It's their festive concert series, and the title isn't just for show: the music is performed by candlelight, with the room lit by the glow of candles rather than the usual house lights. The programme pairs seasonal music with a sprinkling of favourite carols and readings, and the whole thing is unamplified, except for the readings, so you're hearing the voices and instruments exactly as they are.

Jeffrey Skidmore conducts, with Nicholas Wearne on the organ. Skidmore has spoken about his anticipation for programming the thirteen concerts across the region, and as an Associate Artist at Symphony Hall and Town Hall — both B:Music venues — Ex Cathedra are a regular presence in the city's choral scene. The series is billed as a multi-sensory, immersive experience, and the idea is to step out of the winter rush and into the room for a bit of quiet. There's a hearing loop available for anyone who needs it.

This particular date is part of a wider run. In Birmingham, they're also playing St Paul's Church in St Paul's Square on Saturday 19 December, Monday 21 December and Tuesday 22 December, all starting at 7.00pm. St John the Baptist Church is on Hall Drive in Hagley, DY9 9LG, and the concert there also starts at 7.00pm.

Tickets are £48.50, £39.50, £31 or £22, and each includes a £15 per-ticket commission. There's a reduced price of £8 for under-18s and students in full-time education, and a separate rate for those aged 18-30 who aren't in full-time education. The concert starts at 7.00pm.
