Ex Cathedra's festive concert series of seasonal music and carols by candlelight, conducted by Jeffrey Skidmore.
Ex Cathedra are bringing their Christmas Music by Candlelight series to St Paul's Church in the Jewellery Quarter this December, with three dates to choose from: Saturday 19, Monday 21, and Tuesday 22, all starting at 7.00pm. It's part of a wider run of thirteen concerts they're playing across Birmingham, London and the region this season.
The format is pretty straightforward: seasonal music paired with a sprinkling of favourite carols and readings, all performed by candlelight. It's the same thing they do every Christmas, and the candlelight is as much a part of it as the singing. One reviewer described it as 'a multi-sensory, immersive experience ... choral perfection'. Conductor Jeffrey Skidmore has said he looks forward to programming the series, and he's the one leading the choir on the night, with Nicholas Wearne on the organ.
Ex Cathedra are an Associate Artist at both Symphony Hall and Town Hall, so they're a regular fixture in the city's concert life. The performance runs for around two hours and ten minutes, including the interval, and it's not amplified, except for the readings, which are heard through a hearing loop.
