The CBSO Woodwind Section performs joyous serenades by Dvořák, Gounod and Strauss, with oboist François Leleux.
François Leleux is playing at the CBSO Centre on Thursday 22 October, joined by the CBSO woodwind section for a lunchtime concert. It's a woodwind-led programme of serenades by Dvořák, Gounod and Richard Strauss, and the whole thing runs for about an hour with no interval, so it's one of those you can fit into a lunch break and still be back at your desk by mid-afternoon.
The set brings together three distinct pieces. There's Gounod's Petite Symphonie, Dvořák's Serenade in D minor, and the Serenade in Eb by a young Richard Strauss. The CBSO describe the programme as sparkling and full of playful wit, and the woodwind section takes the lead throughout, with Leleux on oboe. It's a lighter, more intimate side of the orchestra than the big symphonic nights you usually associate with the hall.
The concert is part of the CBSO's 2026-27 season, led by Music Director Kazuki Yamada. That season pulls together major symphonic journeys, new commissions, international touring and landmark moments, alongside film scores, pop music and cross-genre collaborations, so this woodwind afternoon sits as one of the smaller, more focused dates in a much larger calendar.
