Chamber music concert featuring works by Rachmaninoff and Lyapunov, performed by CBSO musicians as part of the Centre Stage series.
Centre Stage returns to the CBSO Centre on Monday 10 May, with a double bill of Rachmaninoff and Lyapunov. It's an afternoon concert, part of the CBSO's 2026-27 season under Music Director Kazuki Yamada.
The programme pairs two Russian contemporaries. First is Rachmaninoff's Piano Trio No. 1, a fifteen-minute piece from his youth that the CBSO describes as the work of a Romantic pouring all his yearning into a trio. Then comes Sergei Lyapunov's Piano Sextet, a longer, thirty-five-minute piece. Lyapunov is presented as Rachmaninoff's forgotten contemporary: a composer, star pianist and master of melody whose music is described as grand and dreamy. The two together run for about an hour with no interval.
Six CBSO musicians are on the line-up: Nate Bomans and Victoria Farrell-Reed on violin, Michael Jenkinson on viola, Helen Edgar on cello, Julian Atkinson on double bass and John Thwaites on piano. The concert belongs to Centre Stage, an informal afternoon series at the CBSO Centre programmed and introduced by the musicians themselves, designed to bring audiences closer to the orchestra's artistry in an intimate setting. The series was started by the CBSO's Director of Artistic Planning, Catherine Arlidge, when she was a member of the second violins, and it mixes chamber music personally chosen by the musicians with the CBSO's own repertoire.
