An informal afternoon concert of clarinet trios by Beethoven and Brahms performed by CBSO musicians Joanna Patton, Helen Edgar and John Thwaites.
Joanna Patton, Helen Edgar and John Thwaites are playing clarinet trios by Beethoven and Brahms at the CBSO Centre on Friday 5 March 2027. It's part of Centre Stage, an informal afternoon series at the venue that's programmed and introduced by CBSO musicians themselves, designed to bring audiences closer to the orchestra's artistry in an intimate setting. The series was started by the CBSO's Director of Artistic Planning, Catherine Arlidge, back when she was playing in the second violins, and it usually pairs chamber music favourites with lesser-known gems.
This particular programme is framed as 'three's company', and it opens with Beethoven's exuberant Gassenhauer trio, written after he took popular songs of the day and turned them into something more extraordinary. It closes with Brahms's trio, which is described as intimate and full of poignant emotions and autumn colours. Between them, they cover two of the biggest names in the classical repertoire, both written for the same combination of clarinet, cello and piano.
On stage, you've got Joanna Patton on clarinet, Helen Edgar on cello and John Thwaites on piano. The whole thing runs for about an hour with no interval, so it's a single stretch of music rather than a split afternoon. It's a relatively short commitment, and since it's part of the Centre Stage series, you'll get the musicians introducing the work themselves before they play.
