CBSO musicians play Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in an informal afternoon concert of the Centre Stage series at the CBSO Centre.
Beethoven's String Quartet No.14 comes to the CBSO Centre on Friday 26 February, part of the Centre Stage series. It's a lunchtime concert, starting at 1:00pm, with the performance running for about an hour and no interval. The quartet is made up of CBSO musicians: Jonathan Martindale and Lowri Porter on violin, Chris Yates on viola, and Arthur Boutillier on cello.
Centre Stage is an informal afternoon series at the CBSO Centre, programmed and introduced by the musicians themselves. It was started by Catherine Arlidge, the orchestra's Director of Artistic Planning, back when she was a member of the second violins, and the idea is to bring audiences closer to the music in an intimate setting. The series usually pairs old favourites with lesser-known gems, and this one falls into the former camp: No.14 is one of Beethoven's sublime late string quartets.
There's a bit of a story to these late works. Cut off from the world by his deafness, Beethoven reached deep into his imagination, and these quartets stand two centuries later as an enduring miracle of beauty, wonder and the visionary power of great music. Some say this is the greatest string quartet ever written, so it's a big piece to put on a lunchtime stage. The whole thing is part of the CBSO's 2026-27 season, led by Music Director Kazuki Yamada.
