Family-friendly afternoon with brunch and excerpts from Swan Lake performed by members of Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Birmingham Royal Ballet are taking over the Jennifer Blackwell Performance Space at Symphony Hall on Saturday 24 October for Ballet & Brunch, an afternoon session that pairs a brunch with a performance of Swan Lake excerpts. It's billed as a family-friendly afternoon for ballet newcomers and long-time supporters alike, so it works whether you've spent your life in the front row or you've never seen a performance in the flesh.
The performance itself is a close-quarters look at Swan Lake, with excerpts performed by members of the company and accompanied by one of their musicians. It's not a full production, but a selection of the most recognisable moments from the ballet, and because it's in the Jennifer Blackwell Performance Space rather than a main stage, you'll be much closer to the dancers than you usually are at a ballet. The music is live, too, with a company musician providing the accompaniment on the day.
Around the performance, there's a bit more to it than just the dancing. The brunch is part of the package, and there's a chance to find out more about the company while you're there. It's designed as a relaxed afternoon rather than a formal evening at the opera, which fits the family-friendly description. If you're bringing younger ones, just keep in mind that under-16s need to be accompanied by an adult.
