The Birmingham Rep returns to The House with a new production of A Thousand Splendid Suns, based on Khaled Hosseini's novel, following the lives of Laila and Mariam in war-torn Afghanistan.
A Thousand Splendid Suns opens at The House on Friday 29 January, running through to Saturday 13 February. It's the production that kicks off the Birmingham Rep's 2027 season, and it's a new stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's novel, written by Ursula Rani Sarma with set and costume design by Simon Kenny.
The story follows Laila and Mariam, two women whose lives collide in Afghanistan in 1992, as the country is ravaged by war and the Taliban take over. It's a heavy subject, and the play doesn't shy away from it. This isn't its first outing, either: the Rep first staged it in 2025 to sell-out runs and strong critical praise, and it subsequently toured Birmingham, Nottingham and Leeds before returning to open the new season at The House, the city's only producing-house theatre.
One of the things worth noting is the range of access performances the company is putting on. There will be audio described, BSL interpreted, captioned and chilled shows, and a women's only performance. On that last one, the Rep says it brings to the fore the difficult truth that women still struggle to find spaces where they feel safe.
