Solo concert by Australian cellist and songwriter William Jack, blending folk, bluegrass and classical fusion on the cello.
William Jack plays the Parish Church of St George on Saturday 31 October, a solo cello set that runs from 1 pm to 2 pm. It's a lunchtime slot, so it's the kind of thing you can fit in before the afternoon gets away from you.
Jack is an Australian cellist and songwriter based in London, and he's not exactly a traditional cellist. He comes from a jazz guitar background, and he folds that into an unconventional way of playing the cello, crossing boundaries between genres and cultures. He hails from Adelaide and studied classical cello in Vienna before forging his own pathway away from the conservatory, and that distance from the classical world shows in what he plays. His repertoire spans acoustic, bluegrass, classical crossover, contemporary folk, classical fusion, folk and world fusion — a wide net that pulls from several different traditions.
He's performed solo compositions from his album This Old Cello Box live on BBC Radio 3, and he was selected to perform as a 'New Folk' songwriter at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. Critics have called him 'a master of unconventional cello playing' in GLAM Adelaide, and BBC Radio 3 described his playing as 'outstanding, a truly remarkable performance'.
