Two-hour Minecraft Education building sessions for children aged 8 and over, with festive challenges and a maximum of 16 participants each.
The Great Christmas Build Off is coming to W5 LIFE on Saturday 12 and 19 December, and it's built around Minecraft Education. If you've got a young Minecraft fan at home, this is one of those things they'll actually want to spend a Saturday morning on.
Each session runs for two hours, and the whole point is to get kids building. They're set a series of festive challenges: designing their own Christmas-themed world, from snowy wonderlands and magical Christmas villages to whatever more imaginative things they can come up with, and then competing against other players to see who can build their way to victory. It's pitched as a creative activity for young Minecraft fans to get stuck into and meet other players along the way.
The sessions are for ages 8 and over, with a maximum of 16 participants each, so it's a small enough group that it doesn't feel like a crowded classroom. It's part of the wider Christmas at W5 programme, and the venue itself is worth a mention: W5 LIFE is a 20,000 sq. ft. facility opened by The Odyssey Trust in November 2022 to tackle the skills needs of Northern Ireland's increasingly digitalised economy through immersive STEM experiences. This fits right in with that — it's Minecraft, but the Education version, so there's a bit of a learning angle tucked into the building.

There are two sessions each day: 10am to 12pm and 1:30pm to 3:30pm, on Saturday 12 and Saturday 19 December, so you can pick the one that fits your weekend. It's £10 per child, and with the 16-person cap per session, it's the kind of thing you'll want to book ahead of time.
