Halloween illustration and storytelling workshop with Paul Howard, the illustrator of 'The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark', inspired by the MAC's exhibitions.
Paul Howard is running a storytelling and illustration workshop at The MAC on Saturday 17 October, and it's one of those sessions where you're as much a part of the making as you are the audience. Howard is the illustrator of Jill Tomlinson's The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark, so if you've got that one on your shelf, you'll recognise the hand behind the work.
The whole thing starts with a whistle-stop tour of the exhibitions currently on at The MAC. You'll wander through the galleries with the rest of the group, picking up inspiration from the art on the walls — characters, objects, a particular colour or a strange detail that catches your eye. Once you've gathered your bits and pieces, the group settles in for the workshop itself.
From there, Howard guides the collective response. You build a brand new story page by page, using simple linking sentences and lively illustrations to keep it moving. The characters and objects you spotted around the gallery become the building blocks, and as the pages pile up, the story takes a shape that no one person could have planned. The final page is left entirely to the participants' own words and pictures, so the ending is decided by whoever's in the room on the day.

By the time you're finished, you've got an illustrated story built together from the things you saw around the gallery. It's a Halloween-inspired session, so expect the spooky side of things to creep in. It runs at The MAC in Belfast on Saturday 17 October.
