GBL Productions pantomime, a modern take on the Sleeping Beauty fairytale with slapstick comedy and audience participation, as a Christmas show.
Sleeping Beauty opens at The Waterfront Studio on 20 November, and it's running right through Christmas and into the new year, closing on 10 January. Johanna Johnston takes the lead as Aurora, and the production is a GBL Productions show put on in partnership with the venue.
It's a panto, so you know the shape of it: the classic Sleeping Beauty fairytale told with colourful characters, slapstick comedy, and a soundtrack of familiar hits. There's plenty of audience participation too, and the whole thing is wrapped in a distinctly local Belfast flavour. It's pitched as a family show with humour for children and adults alike, so it works as a Christmas outing with the kids or as a night out with friends.
For those who haven't spent much time there, the show is in The Waterfront Studio, the smaller space within the Waterfront Hall complex at 2 Lanyon Place. The main hall is one of Northern Ireland's leading entertainment venues, right in the heart of Belfast City Centre; it opened in 1997 and has hosted the likes of Neil Diamond, One Direction, Blondie, Robert Plant, The Beach Boys, Bjork and Bryan Adams, alongside local names like Van Morrison and Snow Patrol. It was designed by local architects Robinson McIlwaine and features a 2,250-seat main auditorium inspired by the Berlin Philharmonic Concert Hall, as well as this 500-seat minor hall.
