A relaxed Saturday matinee of German and Austrian opera with music by Mozart, Wagner and the Strauss family, by Ulster Touring Opera.
Ulster Touring Opera are back at the Grand Opera House on Saturday 23 January 2027, with Opera Voyage: Germany, a matinee that takes in the powerhouse of German and Austrian opera. It's the third in a series of four Saturday matinees they're running in partnership with the venue, each one setting sail for a different operatic region. This one focuses on the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Wagner, Johann Strauss II and Richard Strauss.
If you're not usually one for the opera, this is a good place to start. The format is designed as a relaxed, entertaining introduction to the stories and music that have captivated audiences for centuries, rather than a full-length production. It runs for around an hour with no interval, so it's a fairly low-stakes way to spend a Saturday afternoon without committing a whole evening to it. The music comes from four of the biggest names in the tradition, so you'll hear a fair cross-section of the German and Austrian repertoire in one go.
The performance is held in The Studio, the smaller room within the Grand Opera House, which sits in the heart of Belfast. If you're planning to make a proper afternoon of it, there's a pre-show Deli Platter for Two available in the Upper Circle Bar for £90, which you buy in addition to your ticket. Otherwise, it's just the show itself.
