Semi-staged concert of arias and extended scenes from Verdi, Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti and Puccini by Lyric Opera Ireland and the Ulster Orchestra around the theme 'Passion & Betrayal'.
Lyric Opera Ireland are back at the Grand Opera House on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 May 2027, two nights of Italian opera with the Ulster Orchestra. It's a semi-staged concert, so rather than a full production with sets and costumes, the focus stays on the singing, with arias and extended scenes from Verdi, Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti and Puccini. The whole thing is built around the theme 'Passion & Betrayal', and it's curated and directed by Lyric Opera's artistic director, Vivian J. Coates.
On stage there are four singers: soprano Claudio Muschio, mezzo-soprano Sarah Richmond, tenor Abraham Bretón and baritone Noh Dong-Young, with Killian Farrell conducting. Between them they'll work through a selection of arias and longer scenes from five of Italy's biggest opera composers, so you'll hear a good spread of the repertoire rather than just one composer's work. The semi-staged format means there's some acting and movement involved, but the music takes centre stage.
This is a reunion of sorts: Lyric Opera Ireland and the Grand Opera House worked together on The Barber of Seville back in February, and they're partnering again here with the Ulster Orchestra. The two concerts in May are the next step in that collaboration.
