One-day class in which participants create a personal mandala by layering dots of paint on a stone surface or canvas.
Aroona Murphy is leading a one-day mandala painting class at The Duncairn on Saturday 7 November, from 10am to 12pm. It's part of their Mindful Makes series, and it's a morning session rather than a full day, so you're in and out by lunchtime.
Mandala painting is a relaxing, meditative way of working: you build symmetric patterns outward from a central point using dots of paint in different sizes. During the session, you get to choose between a stone surface or a canvas to work on, and you'll experiment with various dotting tools. From there, you'll learn how to layer the dots to build up an intricate, personal design. It's the kind of thing where the process is as much the point as the finished piece.
The Duncairn is an arts centre, concert venue, theatre space and gallery that's been putting arts at the heart of North Belfast since 2014. It sits in the city's Cultural Quarter and specialises in live folk, acoustic and traditional Irish music, alongside a wide range of workshops and classes covering the Irish language, sewing, painting, ceramics, printing and textile art. This mandala session fits right into that mix.
