Live show by the Canadian folk duo Mama's Broke, winners of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year, at The Duncairn.
Mama's Broke play The Duncairn on Saturday 6 February, presented by Moving on Music. They're a Canadian folk duo, Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria, and this is a headline show rather than a supporting slot.
They've built a style they describe as carried across landscapes rather than tied to one place, and you can hear that in where they draw from: folk lineages from Eastern Canada, Appalachia, Ireland and beyond. It's music rooted in long days playing for passing crowds and travelling by foot, so it carries a certain wandering quality to it.
They've been around long enough to have a fair bit of ground to cover. Their debut, Count the Wicked, came out in 2017 and won them the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year. That was followed by Narrow Line in 2022, which earned a JUNO nomination. This show comes on the back of their latest, Reunion, a twelve-song LP released on 28 August via Free Dirt Records and Forward Music Group, which they say traces fractured communities and the erosion of shared ground.

Between the new material and the older records, there's enough there to fill a full set. It's a Saturday night in Belfast, and the music comes from a duo that's spent a good deal of time on the road. The show runs from 7:00 to 9:30pm at The Duncairn.
