Immersive audiovisual performance by An-Ting and Ian Gallagher, with a digital version in Unreal Engine, at Studio Ulster for the Belfast International Arts Festival.
An-Ting and Ian Gallagher bring Lost Communications: Underwater to Studio Ulster on Thursday 29 October, as part of the 64th Belfast International Arts Festival. It's a live audiovisual performance that runs for 45 minutes, and it's one of three immersive works taking place at the studio during the festival.
They describe Underwater as a psychedelic descent into a world that's simultaneously alien and home: the seabed as a hallucination, where behind the strange shapes creatures are working, talking and surviving. Electronic musician An-Ting weaves the conversations of coral, seals and whales into a tapestry of spatial audio and Chinese verse, while Ian Gallagher's real-time 3D pointcloud environments respond in a kaleidoscope of patterns. The two work together to build the sound and the visuals around each other in the room.
There's a digital version running alongside the live performance, built entirely from the acoustic reality of marine life using Unreal Engine and 360° hydrophones. That means you can join the world as an avatar via desktop if you can't make it in person. It's one of three immersive works at Studio Ulster, which is the world's most advanced virtual production facility, and it sits within the immersive arts strand of the 64th Belfast International Arts Festival. The festival itself runs from 14 October to 8 November across more than 30 venues, welcoming artists from 19 countries.
