Levellers play their first Belfast show in almost two decades to mark the 35th anniversary of 'Levelling The Land', with The Meffs and special guest Neds Atomic Dustbin.
Levellers are playing Mandela Hall at Queen's University Belfast on Thursday 22 October, their first Belfast show in nearly two decades. They're touring the 35th anniversary of Levelling The Land, the platinum-selling second album that put them on the map. It was recorded at Ridge Farm studios in Surrey during the summer of 1991 and produced by Al Scott, and it's the record most people associate with them.
That one gave us the singles 'One Way', '15 Years' and 'Far From Home', along with live staples like 'The Game', 'Liberty Song', 'The Riverflow', 'Boatman' and 'Battle Of The Beanfield'. For a lot of people, it became a soundtrack for a generation fed up with Thatcherite politics. Fiddle player Jon Sevink says the original mix never quite captured the band live, because low frequencies were cut to stop 1990s TV and car speakers from overloading; Scott's remix restores that low end. A three-CD package adds B-sides, outtakes and demos unearthed from a cassette that sat in drummer Charlie Heather's cupboard for nearly thirty years. Bassist Jeremy Cunningham's sleeve art keeps the two figures from the debut, now dancing through a broken world.
It's a full bill, too. The Meffs are on, and Neds Atomic Dustbin are joining as special guests. The Brighton folk-rockers have been one of Britain's most enduring bands for nearly forty years, and this is their first time back in Belfast in almost twenty.
